I’d be lying if I said I was a gin girl. In fact my drinking escapades started with vodka then matured to wine — I was a bit of a wine snob but that has definitely toned down especially since discovering gin, Malfy Gin to be specific.
Did you know gin was invented by Italian mocks in 1050 AD? They were the first to add locally foraged juniper (“ginepro“, in Italian) to their distilled spirit. Years later, we get Malfy Gin distilled with juniper plus 5 other botanicals — including coriander, angelica, and cassia bark — and infused with Italian Coastal lemons. YUM! Founder at Biggar & Leith, and Malfy Gin Brand Owner, Elwyn Gladstone, spoke of how they were researching the history of gin, “…and there it was, staring at us; gin was invented in Italy, long before the British or Dutch. However, it wasn’t until we tasted the Vergnano family’s Malfy G.Q.D.I. that we knew we had found a gin that represented literal distillation of Italian quality, culture and craftsmanship. The infusion of the local botanicals and Italian lemons, which themselves have a rich history in Italian culture, give Malfy a distinctive twist.” Malfy Gin is produced at the distillery in Moncalieri, just outside of Torino, an area famous for its wine and spirits. Established in 1906 and it is run by the Vergnano family — Carlo, his wife Pierra and their children Rita and Valter. G.Q.D.I. stands for ‘Gin di Qualita Distillato in Italia’ — a stamp and guarantee of quality and origin.
After all that delicious background information, I was more that excited when I received a bottle of Malfy Gin last month, September. At first it just hang around my kitchen because I was still a bit too attached to a bottle of Pinot Noir I had been nursing — the end of that bottle was the beginning of my new found gin obsession. Admittedly, I wasn’t sure if I should take a shot of the Malfy Gin to fully appreciate it, or if I should just go ahead and start building my mixology skills. I went with the later, after a shot of course. Inspired by Snoop Dogg’s song “Gin and Juice“, mixing Malfy with orange juice seemed like a good place to start my gin journey. Unfortunately, because I’m certainly no mixologist, that combination was a touch too sweet for my liking, which led me to believe Snoop Dogg probably has a sweet tooth of note. However, because the Universe is forever conspiring in our favour, I was sent a bomb list of Malfy cocktails that literally changed the game and had me reaching for gin as opposed to even thinking about wine. The Authentic Gintonic Italiano is officially my go-to drink — so I suppose I can call myself a gin girl now? Yes? I think yes. This zesty cocktail is a mixture of 2 or 3 ounces of Malfy Gin (about 2 or 3 shots), 2 or 3 slices of lemon peel (I actually used 2 tablespoons of lemon juice for this because YOLO), and 6 ounces of premium tonic water. I don’t know if I’ll be able to drink any other alcoholic beverage after this cocktail, I’m hooked.
It’s not everyday you hear a former wine lover pledge allegiance to gin so if you’re thinking of buying yourself a bottle, Malfy Gin is difficult not to notice. Lively colours of blue and yellow are central in its bottle design and brand identity. Blue represents the Mediterranean and the yellow pays tribute to the citrus used in making this gin. Malfy’s bottle is decorated using traditional Italian glass-design techniques and the stopper is made in Italy from real oak. Talk about authentic right?
